Account Books

UM Series

Guy Bunnens inherited two alphabetically-indexed account books listing Middle Eastern Studies items in what appears to be chronological order. The date and author of the books is unknown, but they seem to have been started in 1975. They would seem to constitute an original catalogue, as each item is first allocated a U.M. ("University of Melbourne") number and successive blocks of numbers (many unused) appear to be allocated to successive archaeological periods. The U.M. numbers recorded are (first book) 201-206, 401-405, 601-615, 801-802, 1001-1021, 1201-1204, and (second book) 1601-1715, 2000-2001. There are thus 170 objects noted. In another three columns (for most items) there appears a "mark" (written on the object itself), the place found ("source"), and a brief description sometimes with a quick sketch. These books explain many of the the "other number" and "previous number" references in the Gallery database:

The 1971 Catalogue gives some summary details of some of these items, with entries like "Proto-urban, Jericho Tomb A94: 3 small bowls, 2 juglets." Other Jericho tombs mentioned are D12, M4.

Quite a few of the items are included in Jamieson 1988, and have found their way into the Gallery database with their AJ 1988- reference.

Dr Bunnen's database listed the following 49 UM numbers: 401, 402, 403, 404, 405, 601, 614, 801, 802, 1001, 1002, 1003, 1004, 1006, 1007, 1602, 1603, 1604, 1606, 1607, 1608, 1609, 1610, 1611, 1624, 1625, 1626, 1629, 1630, 1631, 1632, 1634, 1635, 1642, 1650, 1652, 1659, 1673, 1678, 1683, 1685, 1686, 1690, 1691, 1692, 1693, 1695, 1696, 1697, 1703.

Four of these objects in Dr Bunnen's database do not have an AJ 1988- number and (since all Jamieson numbers are listed in the database) were not in Jamieson: 601, 1604, 1607, 1635. All the rest are in both Jamieson and Guy's database.

At the start of the Virtual Museum Project he Gallery 's database had the following UM numbers: 201, 401, 403, 405, 801, 802, 1002, 1003, 1006, 1007, 1596, 1603, 1608, 1625, 1630, 1631, 1634, 1642, 1686, 1693, 1695, 1697, 2000.

The contents of the Account Books have been entered into the Virtual Museum databases and subsequently updated.
