Fields in Virtual Museum Databases 

This table lists only the 55 fields in the Objects (49) and Images (6) databases that are used in the Virtual Museum. It also identifies which fields appear in various search and display layouts and the corresponding formatting documents.

Each primary category of object has its own search/sort layout and details display layout. There are also layouts used when searching the entire database by keyword or identifier.

Formatting documents format and display some or all of the fields in a specified layout. There are generally three formatting documents for each type of search: one for searching and sorting, another for displaying the results of a search, and a third for displaying details about the object.

S=Search/Sort field. Appears in the corresponding 'see' layout & both 'see' and 'res' formatting documents.
D=Detail display field. Appears in the corresponding 'det' layout and 'det' formatting document.

• The cross-category search formatting documents ("search" and "search1") both use the "Websearch" layout. The results of these searches are both formatted by the "vmdbres" document, which then invokes the detail display formatting document appropriate to the primary category of the object.
• The fields "collurl", "siteurl" and "folder" are output to the detail display but are hidden as links behind the displayed "collection", "findspot" and image "filename" fields.
• The "key" field is included in all layouts for reference only. It is not output or displayed.
• Fields in the Images database are included in the Objects database layouts and formatted by the object detail display formatting documents.
